1959 Wallas
Described as an intelligent and relatable leader, Beatrice Wallas was devoted to civic affairs. She served as a member of the board and also as President of the League of Women Voters in Charlotte. Her other accomplishments include being a member of the Citizens’ Committee for Urban Renewal, of the Charlotte Fine Arts Council Board, and of the Joint Council on International Affairs, of which she was also Vice-President. Additionally, she occasionally submitted pieces for the Charlotte Observer. A member of the Temple Beth-El Sisterhood, she was honored by their nomination of her as Woman of the Year. Her devotion to the arts of Charlotte, and to the city’s growth, prompted WBT radio and the previous winners to name Wallas as the 1959 Charlotte Woman of the Year.
