1967 Franklin
Tempie Franklin was born in North Carolina in 1906 and was a very active civic worker in Charlotte for many years. She first became a board member and officer of the YWCA and served in that capacity for 13 years. Franklin was also a board member and officer of the Children's Nature Museum and served as Chairman of the Fine Arts Committee of the Chamber of Commerce where she laid out the plans for the Festival in the Park. Mrs. Franklin is best known for serving as Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Mint Museum where she convinced Mellanay Delhom to house her ceramics collection worth half a million dollars in the Mint Museum, beating out Governor Winthrop Rockefeller of Arkansas who was also trying to bring the collection to his state. She was also instrumental in the construction of the Delhom wing of the museum to house the collection. Her friendly personality was contagious and she remained lifelong friends with Miss Delhom.
