1980s
During the 1980s, Charlotte was experiencing an economic boom with the advancement of the banking business. The banking business flourished with the leadership of financiers Hugh McColl and Edward Crutchfield. McColl helped to transition the North Carolina National Bank into the Bank of America by expanding bank acquisitions across state lines. Once the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Interstate Banking in 1985 there was no stopping McColl and Crutchfield from making Charlotte one of the largest banking cities in the nation. The combination of Bank of America, First Union, and Wachovia made Charlotte enticing to other industries that helped Charlotte bloom into a thriving city in the 1990s.
