1969 McLeod
Dr. McLeod was an important pediatrician and activist in the Charlotte area for many years. She was named Charlotte's Outstanding Career Woman in 1969 due to her work with young people on drug addiction. McLeod set up a program that involves former addicts to come and talk to young people with drug problems and try to help them overcome their addictions. She gave numerous important talks on venereal disease, leading President Nixon to appoint her to a research position on the National Advisory Committee on Communicable Diseases. She worked for many years to get sex education taught in North Carolina's Public Schools and finally achieved this goal despite strong opposition in 1969, the year she became Charlotte's Woman of the Year. She was a pathbreaking woman of her time and is still remembered as an advocate for youth and public health issues.
